Am eligible for an Australia Interdependency Visa?
To be eligible for an Australian Interdependency Visa you must meet the following criteria:
- be sponsored by an eligible person;
- be at least 18 years or older at time of application;
- show that you and your partner have a mutual commitment to a shared life to the exclusion of all others;
- show that you have a genuine and continuing relationship with your partner;
- show that you and your partner have been in your interdependent relationship for the entire 12 months immediately prior to making your application;
- show that you and your partner are living together or, if not, that any separation is only temporary;
- not be in a prohibited degree of relationship (eg: a relationship between a person and his/her ancestor/descendant, between a parent and a child or grandparent and a grandchild, or between a brother and a sister (full or half-blood). This applies to natural and adoptive relationships;
- meet the health and character requirements of Australian Immigration.
How do they assess our relationship?To be eligible for this Australian Partner Visa, you need to show that you have been in a committed relationship for at least 12 months prior to the application. In assessing an interdependent relationship, the government normally looks at evidence of such things as living together full-time, sharing important financial (bank accounts) and social commitments (holidays etc), setting up a household separately from other people, etc. Factors that are considered include:
- Knowledge of each other's personal circumstances;
- The financial aspects of your relationship such as any joint ownership of real estate, joint bank accounts or other major assets;
- The nature of your household, including living arrangements such as joint residential receipts or joint household accounts
- The social aspects of the relationship, provided in statements (statutory declarations) by parents, family members, relatives, friends and other interested parties;
- Joint membership of organisations or joint participation in sporting, social or other activities;
- Joint travel.
Note: Periods of 'dating' are not generally be considered to count towards the 12-month relationship requirement.
