When should I apply?
You can apply for your work permit as soon as you received written evidence of your job offer.


What documents do I need to provide to apply for a work permit?
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of employment in Canada including your job offer
  • Proof that you meet the requirements of the job including educational / training / work experience requirements.



I am not a citizen of the country in which I am applying; do I have to travel to my place of residence to apply?
If you are not a citizen of the country in which you are applying for the Canadian work permit, you must provide proof of your present immigration status in the country of application.  Additional documents may be required from the case officer.


Will I need a medical exam for a Canadian Work Permit?
You will be required to complete a medical exam if your job involves working in the health services, child care, primary or secondary education.
Medicals may also be requested depending on where you lived in the past 12 months.
Finally, medicals may also be requested for those who want to work in Agriculture in Canada.
Please note that a medical exam may add over three months to the processing of your application.


Will there be any conditions on my Canadian Work Permit?
A case officer can impose restrictions on your work permit including some or all of the following:
  • Type of employment in which you may work;
  • The employer for whom you may work, generally you are tied to one employer for the duration of your work permit;
  • Where you may work;
  • How long you may continue to work, all work permits are for a specified period of time that is related to HRSDC confirmation.



Can my spouse/common-law partner and dependent children travel with me to Canada?
Yes, your partner and dependant can travel with you and should be included on your application form.
Your spouse and children must also meet all the requirements for temporary residents to Canada.


Can my spouse/ common-law partner work in Canada?
Yes, but they must apply for their own work permit and must meet the same standards including HRSDC confirmation.


What is a common-law partner for Canadian immigration?
A common-law partner is a person of the opposite or same sex who is currently cohabiting and has cohabited in a conjugal relationship with your for a period of at least 12 months.


What is a dependent for Canadian Immigration?
A dependant may be your own children or those of your spouse/ common-law partner.  Also your dependant must be under the age of 22 and single, that is not married and not in a common-law relationship or 22 years and older and is dependant substantially on the financial support of a parent.


May I leave and re-enter Canada on the Canadian Work Permit?
Yes, once you process a valid passport and travel documents.  You also need to hold a valid work permit if you are returning to work in Canada.
