South Korea requires from United States to increase the number of H1-B visas available for its citizens. Presently around 3500 South Korean citizens receive H1-B visas for USA each year. H1-B visa is mainly used when US employers want to hire graduate level foreign employees in occupations for which shortages exists such as IT, Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Biotechnology. According to the South Korean authorities, this number is not adequate, since a lot of South Korean citizens are living, studying and searching for jobs in United States. According to an anonymous US diplomatic source, the goal of South Korea is to increase the number of H1-B visas available for its citizens to 15 000. Due to the fact that US economy is currently experiencing high unemployment, the South Korean authorities plan to achieve their objective during the next year.
