Can you apply for a second Australian Working Holiday Visa if you have dual nationality?

The answer to this question is no, you cannot. If you have dual citizenship, you can apply for a working holiday visa with only one of your nationalities.

For example, suppose you are a citizen of both Denmark and Ireland and applied for a first working holiday visa with your Irish passport and now you want to apply for a second year working holiday visa. In that case, you should use the same nationality, in this case, your Irish passport, to apply for your second working holiday visa.

However, there are exceptions to this rule for UK citizens.

If you are a UK citizen who hasn’t previously applied for an Australian Working Holiday Visa using your UK citizenship but instead applied using another nationality, you are eligible to apply for a second and/or third working holiday visa using your UK passport.

Can I apply for another first working holiday visa using my other citizenship?

Typically, under no circumstances can you use your other citizenship to apply for another first working holiday visa.

Instead, you will need to use the same citizenship you used to apply for your first working holiday visa to apply for a second or third working holiday visa.

Are there any specific requirements when applying for a second working holiday visa?

Typically to get a second-year Australian Working Holiday Visa, you are required to have completed regional work in the following sectors:

• Bushfire recovery work
• Construction
• Fishing and pearling
• Mining
• Natural disaster recovery work in areas affected
• Plant or animal cultivation
• Tourism and hospitality in northern/remote Australia
• Tree farming and felling

Note that from 1 July 2024, there will be changes for UK citizens regarding specified work.

Update for UK citizens:

If you are a UK citizen and you want to apply for a second 417 working holiday visa, from 1 July 2024, you are no longer required to have completed specified work as a requirement. The same applies if you want to apply for a third working holiday visa.

What are the Australia Working Holiday Visa Requirements?

• Be of good character: you might be asked to submit a police certificate
• Proof of sufficient funds: You must have evidence that you can support yourself (generally $5,000)
• Be outside Australia: You should be out of Australia when you apply for the visa for the first time.
