Australian state of Victoria announces a new online service that connects new immigrants with local employers
The government of the state of Victoria has started a new online service that will connect newly arrived immigrants with potential Australian employers. The Overseas Skills Registry is an online platform to connect skilled workers with employers seeking staff in occupations currently in demand in Victoria.
This includes overseas qualified professionals and tradespeople. Louise Asher, who is a Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business is confident that the new service will prove very successful in helping local companies to liaise with foreign talent. Employers that want to participate in the program and immigrants who want to be included in the database of applicants can apply for an account on the new employment platform.
The service will help prospective immigrants to overcome the biggest hurdles that foreigners face in order to find a job after they had arrived in Australia. The reason for this is that by having an account with the system they can compensate for not having an established network and references from local employers. The Overseas Skills Registry is currently open to two specific groups of skilled workers who are state nominated skilled migrants and international student graduates with previous professional work experience.
State nominated skilled migrants are people who are approved for a state nominated visa. In addition to that, they are permanent residents and are skilled at a job occupation that is in demand by the state of Victoria. International student graduates must have a degree from Victorian university and at least two years of professional experience in an area for which a lack of supply exists on the local job markets.
“This initiative is an election commitment of the Coalition Government and is a win-win for both skilled migrants and businesses that have been hampered by roles they have not been able to fill locally,” explained Asher the Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business.
