US Green Card Program may be abolished

If the Republican candidate Mitt Romney wins the elections next month, this could be the last Green Card lottery. The Republicans are planning to introduce a law which is going to abolish the program. The United States Resident Card – official name of the Green Card gives the right to its holders to remain in United States for the rest of their lives. After five years of continuous residence they may apply for a US citizenship as well. The purpose fo the Green Card is to increase the ethnical diversity of United States Every year 50 000 Green Cards are distributed to countries with low immigration rates.

Earlier this year the Republican Representative Lamarr Smith proposed the STEM Job Act. Its goal is taking the visas allocated under the Green Card Lottery, and allocating them instead to graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, (the so called STEM subjects). Democrats however opposed the act because it will abolish the Green Card program, which according to them is an important contributor to the diversity in the United States. They agreed that USA needs to attract more STEM professionals and proposed their wn  the Brightest and the Best Act. This act would leave the Green Card Lottery in place and grant 2 year visas to STEM graduates enabling them to work in US industry.

Nether party was able to make their proposal an actual law. If Romney wins the election, however, Washington will fall totally under the control of the Republicans and they may be able to turn their STEM Job Act into a law. This means that the 2012 edition of the Lottery may well be the last chance for many people to apply and to win an opportunity to live and work in United States.
